I challenge you to assemble $5.00 worth of goods from any dollar/discount store and make something that showcases your creative talents. To be absolutely clear, this isn't about fashion, this is about the transformation of cheapo dollar store crap into something interesting. If you want to make a garment, go right ahead, I ain't stoppin' ya.
The Rules: You must only spend $5.00, (or under) not including tax. You may shop at as many different stores as you like, but your receipt(s) must be photographed or scanned and included with your entry. I will make allowances for adhesives, paint/dye, and tools used to construct your entry, but everything else must be purchased at the dollar store. Your entry must consist of images of your project, a brief description of your entry and what all went into it, your name and your city of residence.
The Prize: The book, D.I.Y. Design It Yourself
My Celebrity Judges: Angie P. from Swapatorium and Katey N. from One Good Bumblebee / That's Hot
The Deadline: August 2, 2006 (two weeks from now- better get to it!) Deadline extended to August 16th! Deadline extended yet again to August 30!

Entry #1 from Sara Childs:
Hello! I was so glad to see your challenge; I really enjoy participating in something creative, unique, and fun! As soon as I saw your challenge, I knew exactly what I wanted to create. Until I got to the store. All my previous ideas flew out the window and I was immediately smitten with my final design.
The Dirty Girl’s Night on the Town
Materials:
Laundry bag
2 hand towels
Cosmetic bag
Every “dirty girl” has a moment when she is going out, but has nothing to wear, as everything is in the laundry. What does the dirty girl do? She makes her outfit from her laundry! Take one dollar-store lime green laundry bag; intersperse with dollar store towels to create a twirly, cheerleader-style skirt (one-size fits most, due to the convenient drawstring waistband). Add a dollar-store handbag and she’s ready to go! In addition, scraps from the dollar store towels can be used to upgrade/appliqué a white t-shirt to complete the look! Constructed using a Singer sewing machine. Pattern is my own design.
Entry #2 from Diane Jones:
Thanks for hosting this challenge! I’m hooked on Project Runway and whipping these things up was a blast. Hey, I had lots of ideas while shopping and since you didn’t specify a limit on the entries, watch out. Hopefully, they’ll get better!
Lace WristCuff
Materials:
Heart shaped doily
Pkg of pearls
Pkg Collage Junque
Ok, it’s an obvious project but I couldn’t pass up the pearls and feathers. The doily is just wrapped around the wrist and secured by the larger pearls through the holes in the lace. Feathers are secured with more pearls and crystal beads that came in the collage junque packet.

Entry #3 also from Diane Jones:
Lock-It Necklace
Materials:
Choke chain (for dogs weighing up to 35lbs)
Solid Brass lock with keys
Gold ribbon
Lockets don’t necessarily hold pictures. The lock is also the clasp that holds the ends together and requires a key to remove the necklace. The ribbon is just long enough to allow the key to fit into the lock. Cheap fun, for sure.

WINNER! Entry #4 from Justine Brooks:
Decorative Wall Hanging
Materials:
two packages of foam postcard thingies (Dollar Tree $2)
curtain rod (King Dollar $1)
paper clips (King Dollar $1)
I even used only dollar store tools to make it!
scissors, glue stick, scary dollar store glue gun that smelled like mothballs and didn't have a trigger, hole puncher
